My year in books: 2020!

So when it came to writing this post, I went back to my 2019 wrap up and woah has that aged poorly, I recall writing something along the lines of how excited I was about seeing what 2020 has in store for us all and…I think we can all say 2020 has been something alright. I definitely didn’t have a global pandemic anywhere on my radar and how far reaching the effects of this have been, but despite this pandemic changing life in so many ways, fiction was definitely a comfort for me. Like many people this year, I dove headfirst into books, movies and tv shows to keep me distracted and maintain a shred of sanity. Despite all the tough things I’ve been through this year in my personal life and on the job hunting front, there have also been some positive moments.

I hit 700 followers then onwards to 800 followers on my blog this year which is a massive milestone to me, I’ve grown so much more confident in my style of content and just really enjoyed being on the bookish parts of the internet. I want to take this moment to really thank anyone and everyone who takes the time to read my posts or follows me in any capacity, I genuinely appreciate it and it has made such a positive impact on my life. I wish blogging and content creating could be my full time job but even as my little hobby, it brings me so much joy and keeps me occupied.

Earlier this year I applied to be part of the ambassador programme for Hot Key Books, a Y/A imprint of Bonnier Books which has published books like The Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black, Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo and Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko. I honestly didn’t expect to get chosen but I did and it’s been a cool couple of months so far getting to know the team and working on a few things with them. Plus the amazing bookmail has genuinely made me so happy and kept my spirits up. I feel like 2021 will be the big year for us ambassadors and there are so many exciting campaigns to come so look out for those!

This year I also managed to smash my reading goal, which was originally set at 100 books – in total when this post has gone up I’ve read 141 books !!! Numbers have never really been important to me and I didn’t ever put pressure on myself to read a certain amount because that sucks all the fun out of it and above all, I read for enjoyment but I’m definitely really happy I surpassed my goal anyway. I’ve read from so many different diverse genres and authors this year and I’ve made it more of a concentrated effort to put less pressure on reviewing each and every book I read. I’ve found that writing short little reviews made it more fun and choosing specific books for my blog content kept the stress down too.

A pie chart breaking down the genres I read this year because I’m extra haha

My top picks – (all links will take you to my reviews!)

2020 fiction faves

Backlist titles –

Despite the dumpster fire that has been 2020, I’m cautiously optimistic about 2021 and have my fingers crossed that it will bring something good for all of us.

Lots of love,

Rums x

  1. Congratulations on 141 books, and I’m so happy the ambassador role is going well. Clap When You Land and These Violent Delights are both in my top 10 for 2020. I hope you have a lovely New Year, Rumaanah ☺

    1. Thank you so much Stephen! I really appreciate all your support and our bookish talks + glad that we have some favourites in common! ☺️ here’s to an amazing 2021 and more brilliant reading + books. Wishing you all the best 💫

  2. If there is one thing that came out of this pandemic it’s that I’ve started spending more of my nights reading. I did used to read during my commute to and from work but sometimes the whole reading while in motion was like dizzying – so one thing lockdown brought was jumping straight from pandemic world into fictional books at home in a comfy corner (me and nonfiction aren’t best friends yet haha).

YAY – massive congratulations on 800 blog followers! that’s amazing!! I love reading your posts and always find myself adding books to my want to read list. Also congrats on being part of the ambassador program for Hot Key Books!! The Folk of the Air trilogy is one book I ALWAYS recommend when someone asks me for a recommendation – it’s like the definition of a literary gift!

This year was the first time I’ve made my reading goal in the 100’s! 101 to be exact because why not! So I’m curious if I’ll get to complete that but not trying to put too much pressure on me to and just read for fun!

WAIT A MINUTE 25 HISTORICAL FICTIONS – me as I need to scroll through your reviews because I LOVE reading historical fictions even though it takes a while for me to find just the right one to five into! Romance and Fantasy books are like my bread and butter really haha!

ANDDDD now to add the books that aren’t on my list to my want to read list!
